Mission, Vision & Goals

The mission if the City’s Seniors Service is to offer opportunities for health aging by providing a vibrant hub for older adults that supports and empowers the aging population of Portsmouth. Portsmouth Senior Activity Center is committed to providing programs, activities, services, information, and education for people in the Portsmouth area. The Center strives to provide a caring and healthy community which encourages fitness and wellness, intergenerational relationships, civic involvement, lifelong learning, and creativity.

How is your age-friendly initiative structured?

Through AARP.

Describe any partnerships you have developed?

City staff/departments, regional agencies, business, citizen groups, and school district. Closer relationship with AARP. Attending a conference in NOV and will learn more then.

What is the role of volunteers?

Would not be able to operate without our volunteers. They assist with many things which include but is not limited to; fitness classes, lunch program, and our greeter and the center.

Strategies that have contributed to your success? Barriers you have encountered?

Newsletter for good communication, using appropriate and positive language when messaging, and picking a tone/voice for conveying a message.

Being aware of issues on aging in our state and nationally. I attended Alliance for Healthy Aging meetings, NH Association of Senior Center, Tri-State Learning Collaborative, Senior Leadership Alum, and Seacoast Provider Network.

Community Initiatives

Transportation

Senior transportation is operated by COAST and subsided by the City of Portsmouth. It is an additional service to an already establish fixed route system.

Health & Wellness

Police “seniors walk with a cop”- a way for police to walk with residents and talk informally about issues, Senior Activity Center 1,100 members.

Accessibility & Walkability

Bike/walk master plan update targeted for feedback from older adults.

Communication

Library offers programs for older adults including computer services.

Other

Meals on wheels offers delivered and congregate meals, High school/senior activity center partners for service learning students to volunteer for a day of service projects and for graduation service learning requirement.

Dementia friendly work

  • All 1st responders have gone through dementia friendly training
  • Police did train the trainer
  • Firefighters did falls prevention and dementia training
