Several municipalities and citizen’s groups are building aging-friendly communities in northern New England without following any particular model.  We call these efforts “home grown.” Some of these communities have been started by towns, others have been started by residents who partner with town officials, and others are outside the municipal structure entirely. Some are large efforts that cover more than one community, others are limited to a block or a neighborhood. What they all have in common is to meet the needs and nurture the aspirations of older adults while creating great places for people to live.

To learn more about the home-grown age friendly initiatives, in northern New England, go to our “home-grown” webinar, check out a fantastic resource on Making Your Community Livable by our friends at the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), and read the community profiles of aging-friendly initiatives that do not identify as villages, are not members of the AARP-NAFC, and are not Thriving in Place communities that have received funding through the Maine Health Access Foundation.
