Special Program: Economic Justice For Older Adults: Expanded Eligibility for the Medicare Savings Program

Wednesday September 4, 2024

Too often diverse older people who have experienced lifetimes of intentional economic injustices and disparities are forgotten in current quests for equity and economic justice. Economic justice is the idea that the economy will be healthier if we create meaningful opportunities for everyone to succeed. This concept often fails to reach back to provide justice for those who were not given a fair chance to succeed in the past. Not only is it never too late for justice, there couldn’t be a better time to provide economic justice to older diverse people who are more likely living in poverty and unable to meet their basic needs. This session explores the Medicare Savings Program and Maine’s success at using data, research, and tools like the Elder Economic Standard Security Index to significantly increase eligibility for the Medicare Savings Program (MSP), lifting tens of thousands of older Mainers out of structural poverty.
